Interministerial Drone Assessment Unit: Situation Update (19 September 2026)

On the evening of 18 September 2026, Luxembourg Airport temporarily suspended flight operations following the visual sightings of unidentified and unauthorised drones within the airspace over the airport.

As a precautionary measure and in accordance with established safety protocols, the airspace was immediately closed to ensure the safety of passengers, flight crews, airport personnel and aircraft. A total of 19 flights were diverted to other airports.

Following two inspections that ruled out any immediate risk to aviation safety, airport operations resumed at approximately 1:20 a.m.

In response to the incident, the Interministerial Drone Assessment Unit convened to assess the situation and consider appropriate follow-up measures.

Prime Minister Luc Frieden convened the Minister for Defence, Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes and Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden, as well as the relevant authorities and services for a meeting on the morning of 19 September.

Definite conclusions cannot be drawn based on the information available at this stage. The competent authorities are continuing with their analyses and are carrying out the necessary checks in close cooperation with their international partners.

As part of their prevention and vigilance responsibilities, the authorities are implementing appropriate follow-up and awareness-raising measures among the stakeholders concerned.

The Government is closely monitoring developments and remains fully mobilised to ensure the safety and security of the population.

For security reasons and the proper conduct of the ongoing analysis, no further details can be disclosed at this stage.
