Pirate attack against a Luxembourg-flagged vessel in the Gulf of Guinea

On March 14th 2021, the Luxembourg-flagged vessel Bourbon Evolution 802 was attacked by pirates in international waters off Nigeria. The 21-strong ship’s crew immediately raised the alarm and, in accordance with security procedures, took refuge in the reinforced “citadel”, a space which enables the crew to be protected during such an attack.

Two patrol vessels operating in the region were able to intervene quickly and catch up with the vessel under attack, causing the ten or so pirates to flee and enabling the crew to escape unharmed from the  incident.

The Luxembourg authorities were informed of this attack by the Bourbon group and followed the development of the situation until  the crew was released thanks to regular contacts with the shipowners and the French authorities.
