Orange alert: thunderstorm warning with heavy rain and winds in the evening (15.07.2024)

The Severe Weather Risk Assessment Unit (CERI), which met early this afternoon to assess the weather situation, has issued a warning of severe thunderstorms, which could affect the whole of the country.

Between 18:00 and 22:00, severe thunderstorms may occur in the Grand Duchy, accompanied by rainfall totals of up to 25 litres/m2 (locally up to 40l/m2) in a short space of time, causing local flashfloods. During thunderstorms, gusts of wind (up to 90 km/h or more locally) and hail (max. 1-2 cm) can also be expected.

The authorities are warning the public to be vigilant, especially during seasonal outdoor activities (camping, events, etc.), not to take shelter under trees, especially not under isolated trees, and to avoid walking in the forest. It is advisable not to stay near rivers and streams, which tend to overflow quickly. It is also advisable to shelter objects that are sensitive to the wind (garden furniture, parasols, etc.).
