Will hospitals function as normal following a nuclear accident?

If the population is required to take shelter following a nuclear accident then access to hospital services will be limited to major and/or life-threatening emergencies.

Out-patient clinics and normal consultations will be closed and visits forbidden.

In addition, all hospitals have an internal emergency plan that will be implemented at the appropriate time.

Should people that are in hospital leave by their own means?

In the event of a nuclear emergency, access to hospital services will be limited to major and/or life-threatening emergencies and the management of the establishments in question will try to make as many beds available as possible.

If possible, the patients in question will be requested to return home.

The patients that are requested to do so will of course be selected taking into consideration their medical situation.

Who should you contact in the event of a medical emergency?

In the event of a medical emergency, you should follow normal procedures and call 112.

However, please note that in a nuclear emergency, hospitals will be reserved exclusively for major and/or life-threatening emergencies.

In any event you should keep calm.

Are Luxembourg's hospitals equipped to deal with people who have become contaminated?

All of the country's hospitals have staff trained in nuclear medicine.

If national structures prove insufficient, foreign authorities will be contacted to provide international assistance.

How does the evacuation of a hospital take place?

As far as the evacuation measure is concerned, none of Luxembourg's hospitals are located in the primary planning zone.

Evacuation nevertheless might prove necessary after the release phase.

However, such an evacuation would not be carried out as a matter of emergency.

One of your loved ones is in hospital. Are you allowed to pick them up?

During the threat phase, hospitals will authorise a maximum number of patients to be released if their individual medical situation permits. At that point, and if the patient's medical situation allows, you will be able to pick them up.

However, this will not be possible during the release phase in order to guarantee your safety and that of your loved one.

Patients will be safe in the hospital and will be looked after by hospital staff.

Do not try to pick your loved ones up from hospital as you risk exposing yourself to dangerous radioactivity.

The shelter phase will last no longer than 48 hours.

How will an evacuation from a retirement or care home take place?

If a retirement or care home is located within an area to be evacuated, both guests and staff will be evacuated along with the population from the area.

Priority is given to returning guests to their homes, if the latter is located outside of the evacuation area.

One of your loved ones is in a retirement home or care home. Are you allowed to pick them up?

During the threat phase, and if the person's health permits, you may pick them up.

However, this will not be possible during the release phase in order to guarantee your safety and that of your loved one.

They will be safe in the establishment and will be looked after by the staff.
